Algebraic expression teaching strategies
Here are links to different teaching strategies for algebraic expressions to use in your classroom! Please click!
Strategy 1: Here we have a lesson called a carousel lesson. Students sit in tables of 4-6 students. Students start by answering a starter question. The main lesson is where students are solving algebraic expressions using different methods. Students pick our 3 cards from an envelope to make an expression. Students move from table to table working on matching the algebraic expressions to their word statements. Students talk about the relationship between the expression and their word statements. Then they solve the mathematical problems. Here is a link that shows the effectiveness of this strategy. http://link.springer.com/article/10.1023/A:1003011913153
Strategy 2: Students will learn how to read and write algebraic expressions using variables. We review that a variable takes place of a number. We use a blank box to first represent the variable. Then we use letters to represent a variable. We review words that also mean the same thing as add, minus, multiplication, and division that students will see in problems.
