Probability and statistics teaching strategies
Here are links on different teaching strategies on probability and statistics to use in your classroom! Please click!
Strategy 1: Can you beat the odds is all about probability of real world events. Here we teach students that in different real world situations there are many possible outcomes. This is shown through many demonstrations using students. Using dice is a great way to show probability in your classroom. One person roles the die and gets a 6 which has a 1/6 chance of rolling that number. Students will grasp probability using manipulative demonstrations like this. Here is a link that shows the effectiveness of this strategy. http://www.education.ox.ac.uk/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Teachers-Probability-Handbook.pdf
Strategy 2: Give each student a bag of Skittles. Have the students look at the bag and feel it to make a guess of how many Skittles are in the bag. Then have the students guess how many of each color they think their will be in the bag. Have the students open the bag of Skittles and count how many total there are and the totals of the different colors. Tell them to record the answers next to their guesses. Finally, ask the students questions about the probability of choosing certain colored Skittles. Be sure to include questions that have to do with someone eating one of the Skittles and how that will change the probability. Then have the students test out the probability by putting the Skittles from their bag into a cup. Have the students find a partner and take turns reaching into each others cups. The students should then record how many times they pulled out each color. After everyone has finished, have the students look to see if their probabilities held true. The following link explain the levels that students should be at and when in probability and statistics.
